Quick start

MarkMarkDown is a single-window Markdown reader and editor for macOS. Open a file, choose a view, and start writing. There is no account to create and nothing to sync.

  • Open a file: use File → Open, drag a .md file onto the window, or choose a document from Recent.
  • Switch views: press ⇧⌘E to move between reading and editing. Use View → Split to write and preview side by side.
  • Search: press ⌘F in reading mode for full-text search, or in editing mode for the editor's find panel.
  • Settings: press ⌘, to change the theme, type sizes, line numbers, and auto-save.
  • Export: use the File menu to export HTML or PDF, print, or share.

File and folder access

MarkMarkDown runs in the macOS App Sandbox. The first time you open a document from a folder, macOS may ask you to allow folder access. Choose the folder that contains the document.

That permission lets the app load local images, save pasted images next to the document, and rename the file when you change its title. The app only receives access to what you choose.

If you chose the wrong folder, close the document and open it again. You can also review access in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Files and Folders → MarkMarkDown.

Images and assets

Paste or drag an image into the editor. MarkMarkDown saves it in a folder named after the document, for example quiet-power-assets, and writes a relative Markdown link. Keep that folder beside the document when you move or back it up.

Remote images referenced by URL are loaded from the network when you open the document. If you are offline, a remote image may not appear until you reconnect.

Common questions

Where are my recent documents stored?

Recents are kept locally on your Mac, along with security-scoped bookmarks so the app can reopen files after a restart. Right-click a recent document and choose Remove from Recents to remove it from the list.

Does MarkMarkDown sync my files?

No. MarkMarkDown works with ordinary files on your Mac and does not include a cloud account or sync service. You can keep documents in iCloud Drive, Dropbox, or any other folder you already use.

How do I export a PDF with page breaks?

Use File → Export as PDF for a continuous PDF, or File → Print and choose Save as PDF for paginated output with the macOS print dialog.

What happens to an unsaved document?

Untitled work is kept as a draft and offered for recovery the next time you open the app. When you close a saved document with unsaved changes, MarkMarkDown asks whether to save, discard, or cancel.

Can I edit Markdown in reading mode?

No. Reading mode is for reading and searching. Press ⇧⌘E or click the pencil button to edit. Split view keeps the editor and preview visible together.

Which Markdown features are supported?

CommonMark and GitHub Flavored Markdown, including headings, emphasis, links, images, blockquotes, tables, task lists, and fenced code blocks.

What are the system requirements?

macOS 14 Sonoma or later. The Mac App Store listing will show the final compatibility details when MarkMarkDown is released.
